Welcoming Message from the Dean

The present Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences started as a Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology under Faculty of Science in 1968. Today, we have five departments that make up the Faculty of Pharmceutical Sciences. We offer a professional Pharmacy undergraduate programme that leads to the degree of B.Pharm which is a pre-requisite for registration with the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria. Our vision is to be a leader in shaping healthcare through innovative pharmaceutical education, research and practice. Even though the Faculty is geographically located in Africa, nevertheless it has the aspiration to be globally connected to all stakeholders in pharmaceutical education, industry, research and services. With the network of global alliance, ABU Pharmacy hopes to be instrumental in creating new grounds in education, research and practice. The healthcare and pharmaceutical industries are making rapid advances over the years; the Department will need to keep abreast with the environmental changes so as to be relevant as well as to lead in the advancement of the Pharmacy profession and the industry.


Mission

Our B. Pharm. program are to produce Pharmacists with the required skills, knowledge and motivation to provide pharmaceutical services. The skills of our graduates are sufficient to compete with other pharmacist all over the world. These are in line with the objectives of the Pharmacists’ Council of Nigeria

Vision

Instil in the students a sense of appreciation of the Pharmacy profession and involve them in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and study, Instill in the student the dynamic value of the Pharmacy profession, which makes life long learning a necessity.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the B. Pharm. degree program is to produce educated persons and well trained professionals that will be able to provide relevant pharmaceutical services to the public

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The initial training at the School of Pharmacy in Zaria started around 1947 to train dispensers (Dispensers Course), and much later in 1961 it was upgraded to the Chemist and Druggist Diploma.

Pharmaceutical ScienceDepartment of Pharmacology & Therapeutics

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics started as department of pharmacy and pharmacology under the faculty of science and later became department of pharmacology and clinical pharmacy.

Pharmaceutical ScienceDepartment of Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Microbiology

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciencess started in 1968 as the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology in the Faculty of Sciences with Prof. G.O. Osuide as the Head of Department. The Department was then running Bachelor of Sciences (B.Sc. Pharmacy) degree programme.

Pharmaceutical ScienceDepartment of Pharmacognosy & Drug Development

The Department was first curved out from the Department of Pharmacology in 1980. It was first headed by the late Prof. J.A. Owoyale and subsequently by six others. The Department is located in the 3rd and 4th floor of the main faculty building. The Department has 3-laboratories; instrument room, 18 offices and a conference room.

Pharmaceutical ScienceDepartment of Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacy Practice

Pharmacy education has a strong scientific and laboratory based curriculum. With the shift of focus from product to patient, change is strongly proposed to strengthen Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology in the curriculum.
